About Taekwon-Do:   Taekwon-Do is a Korean martial art named in 1955 but ancient in origin. It is distinctive from many martial arts in that it emphasises the use of the legs in self-defense. Today Taekwon-Do is the most popular and most internationally practiced martial arts.

Recognition:      Quin TKD is a member of the Irish Taekwon-Do Association (www.taekwondo.ie) the International Taekwon-Do Federation (www.tkd-itf.org), and the Irish Martial Arts Commission (www.martialarts.ie). This ensures that all instructors are trained and certified to the highest levels internationally and that the students in turn will achieve the same level of training and certification.

Is it for me?      The practice of Taekwon-Do is suited to young and old, male and female. In fact due to their natural flexibility ladies often excel at kicking. The club has members from as young as seven years of age while still catering to members forty years of age and above. There is a gradual introduction to the art and to the physical conditioning needed to practice. The first six to eight months are spent enhancing flexibility and general fitness while learning basic hand and foot techniques. From this point on you may expect to learn much more about self defense technique, competitive and practice sparring (attack and defence techniques practiced with protective padding and controlled contact), dynamic kicking techniques and Taekwon-Do theory.

Could I get hurt?        The practice of Taekwon-Do as with any sport or physical activity includes a certain assumed risk of injury. Practice may very occasionally result in bruises. You may experience muscle soreness due to exercise strain particularly at the early stages of training. Taekwon-Do sparring is a contact sport where points are scored when a controlled kick or punch is landed to the body or head. This may of course result in bruising or similar minor injuries. Sparring is carried out under close supervision and opponents are matched for experience and size.

What do I need?        All you need to start with is a pair of track suit bottoms and a T-Shirt. A training uniform is required for the first grading. These take place every two to three times per year. After the second grading protective equipment for sparring must be purchased. The dobok and sparring equipment is comparable in price to a football strip and boots. This is all the equipment you will need to train. All equipment can be bought through the club.

Are there any rules?          The club has several rules, which make training more comfortable and safer for all concerned. They also reinforce the etiquette that goes hand in hand with martial arts. These are as follows:

  • At all times address the instructor as Mister (using the instructors surname) or Sir. If the instructor is female then miss is appropriate.
  • No shoes other than approved training shoes are to be worn during training.
  • No profanity is to be used in the dojang (training hall)
  • No jewellery is to be worn during training
  • You must advise the instructor if you need to leave the class
  • Never lose your temper
  • Finger and toenails are to be kept short and clean
  • No idle chatter while training is in progress
  • If you are late then attract the instructors attention and request permission to join the class.
